Don't Be Cheated By Numbers

Once a retreat was arranged for the servants in the church of St. Peter, the Seal of the Martyrs, in Alexandria. The church at the time was still in the beginning of its development and it was expected that there would be some 80 servants on this retreat day in the church. However many servants did not come, and the numbers were no higher than 30 servants.

Father Bishoy Kamel asked the servant in charge of organising the retreat, “You are upset that many servants did not attend?” The servant answered, “Yes”.

So Father Bishoy said to him, “The word of God is expensive, and God has therefore entrusted it to those with faithful hearts. God sent in this day only those who will benefit and this group is the yeast with which the entire service will be fermented.

What is the use of a church meeting attended by hundreds even thousands whilst those who benefit from its word and act upon it in their lives are few. Therefore do not be deceived by numbers, rather be happy with the attendance of a single servant, for God has sent him so that He may place His word in their heart and mind, as He did with St. Mark, and many of the prophets and the apostles.

From now on I don’t want you to be happy with the quantity of people but rather with the type whom benefit. Anywhere I go to speak I am happy with those who are there, no matter how few their numbers are for I feel that God has sent these particular people to benefit and to witness to His Holy Name.”
